CHAPTER 8: The Science of Truth

At 3:00 PM on Friday afternoon, Detective Hayes walked into the child advocacy center where Elena, Julian, and court-appointed child psychologist Dr. Sarah Bennett were waiting.

Hayes placed a sealed white envelope on the conference table.

"The state crime lab completed the emergency genetic sequence," Hayes announced, his voice carrying the weight of absolute finality. "The probability of maternity between Elena Vance and the minor child known as Leo Sterling is 99.998 percent. The child is legally and biologically Noah Vance."

Elena let out a ragged breath she felt like she had been holding for six long years. She covered her face with both hands, her shoulders shaking as the final remnant of doubt was wiped away forever.

Dr. Bennett leaned forward, speaking with measured compassion. "Now comes the transition. Noah has lived six years knowing Julian as his father and this estate as his home. Abruptly ripping him out of his environment overnight could cause profound psychological regression. We must build a bridge of trust."

Julian looked up, his eyes red-rimmed. "Whatever Noah needs. Whatever Elena decides. I am placing all of my resources at your disposal, Dr. Bennett. If my presence confuses him, I will step back. If he needs me to help him transition, I will stay. My ego does not matter here. Only his healing."

Elena lowered her hands and looked at Julian. In a world full of self-serving power, this man’s total surrender of his own desires for the sake of her son’s well-being showed her the true caliber of his character.

"He loves you, Julian," Elena said quietly. "I will never ask my son to unlove someone who kept him safe and cherished him, even if the foundation was a lie. We do this together—for Noah."
