CHAPTER 5: The Fortress of Glass

The morning sun broke over the Sterling estate in Greenwich, casting long, golden shadows across acres of manicured lawns and towering iron gates. Yet inside the twenty-room mansion, the air felt colder than a crypt.
Temporary protective custody had been awarded to Julian under strict court supervision while the expedited DNA results were processed, with Elena granted unlimited, round-the-clock visitation rights on the premises.
Elena walked up the sweeping limestone staircase, her simple canvas sneakers making no sound against the thick Persian runners. A young maid led her to the third floor, where Leo’s bedroom occupied an entire sunlit wing.
When Elena pushed the door open, she found the little boy sitting cross-legged on the floor, ignoring rows of imported motorized cars and custom Lego sets. He was holding a small, crumpled drawing he had made in the precinct with a blue crayon.
"Noah?" Elena called softly.
Leo’s head snapped up. His eyes brightened with a joy so pure it brought fresh tears to her eyes. "Mama!"
He scrambled up and threw himself into her open arms. Elena dropped to her knees, burying her face in his neck, rocking him back and forth.
"I thought they sent you away," the boy whispered into her collar. "The lady in the green dress told me bad people would take me if I didn't stay in my room."
"No one is sending me away ever again," Elena promised, kissing his forehead repeatedly. "I fought across oceans of time to find you, my sweet boy. Nothing on earth will tear us apart now."

From the doorway, Julian stood quietly, watching the tender scene. For the first time in his privileged life, he saw what genuine wealth looked like—and it had nothing to do with trust funds, yachts, or family pedigree. It was the unyielding, sacrificial love radiating from this woman who had spent six years in the cold just to hold her son again.
