CHAPTER 2: Whispers on Polished Marble

Victoria’s emerald gown swished aggressively as she surged forward, abandoning all decorum. Her diamond drop earrings swayed violently. "How dare you make a scene at my wedding! You’re a common criminal trying to extort a prominent family! Security, remove this trespasser!"

Two burly men in earpieces and tailored charcoal suits pushed through the double mahogany doors, their heavy steps purposeful. But before they could lay a finger on Elena, Julian raised a single, commanding hand.

"Stand down," Julian ordered.

"Julian!" Victoria snapped, her face draining of color. "She is a lunatic who slipped past the catering screening! Look at Leo—she's brainwashing him!"

"I said wait," Julian repeated, his voice cold and deliberate. He knelt down slowly on the hard marble, coming eye-to-eye with the boy who bore his family name on paper. Julian had raised Leo since he was two months old, cherishing the boy as his entire world after Victoria had brought him home from what she claimed was a private, closed agency in Boston. Yet, looking closely at the terrified child clinging to this stranger, Julian saw something undeniable: the same hazel-gold flecks in Leo’s eyes were mirrored perfectly in Elena’s tear-stained gaze.

"Leo," Julian said, softening his tone. "Look at me, buddy."

Leo peeked out from Elena’s shoulder, tears shimmering on his dark lashes. "She sang the song, Daddy," Leo whimpered, his small voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "The song about the little sparrow on the windowsill. The one in my dreams."

Victoria’s hand flew to her mouth. Her eyes darted frantically toward the exit, a bead of sweat breaking through her immaculate makeup.

Elena pulled Leo closer, shielding him with her body as she addressed Julian directly. "His name isn't Leo Sterling. His name is Noah Vance. Born June 14th at Saint Jude Memorial. He was taken from the maternity ward while I was fighting post-birth sepsis. You bought my stolen child, Mr. Sterling."
