CHAPTER 7: The Arraignment

Two days later, the steps of the Southern District Courthouse of New York were swarmed with satellite trucks and hundreds of journalists.

Victoria Sterling, stripped of her designer gowns and jewelry, was led up the stone steps in handcuffs, wearing an orange Department of Corrections jumpsuit. The federal indictment was staggering: interstate kidnapping conspiracy, wire fraud, falsification of medical records, and bribery of public officials.

Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was electric.

"Bail is denied," the magistrate judge declared, slamming the gavel down with a resounding crack. "Given the defendant's immense family resources and foreign bank accounts, Mrs. Sterling represents a significant flight risk. She will be remanded into custody pending trial."

Victoria turned around in panic, scanning the gallery until her eyes found Julian sitting in the front row. "Julian! Tell them to stop this! You're ruining our family name!"

Julian stood up slowly, meeting her frantic gaze with cold, resolute finality. "There is no family name to protect, Victoria. There is only a little boy whose childhood you stole. You will answer for every single second of pain you caused."

As the marshals dragged a screaming Victoria through the side door, Elena watched from the back of the courtroom. She felt no triumphant joy, only a heavy, sobering closure. The monster that had ripped her baby from her arms was finally behind bars, but the hardest battle was just beginning: rebuilding a shattered life for a child torn between two worlds.
