Chapter 6: An Unseen Calamity

Three days before the National Innovation Showcase, tragedy struck the university's design building.
At 2:00 AM, a faulty electrical panel in the basement storage caused a localized fire. Though the building's sprinkler system engaged quickly and prevented total destruction, black smoke and torrents of water ruined dozens of student projects stored in the lower lockers.
Leo arrived at dawn to find the entrance taped off by emergency services. Clara was already standing on the sidewalk, wrapping a damp coat around herself, her face pale.
"Leo," she gasped as he approached. "The basement lab took the brunt of the water damage."
Leo pushed past the caution tape with permission from the campus security guard. When he reached his locker, his heart sank. The locker door had been pried open by firefighters clearing hot spots. His main functional prototype—weeks of delicate magnetic micro-wiring and custom-cured polymer soles—was completely submerged in a pool of soot, chemical fire-retardant foam, and standing water.
The electronic tension sensors were fried. The specialized composite leather had absorbed corrosive runoff, warping beyond salvage.
Julian appeared at the top of the stairwell, holding an intact waterproof case containing his team's smart-sneaker prototype. He looked down at Leo standing in the ankle-deep muck.

For a second, Julian’s eyes flickered with a flash of malicious relief—his primary competitor was eliminated. But as he looked closer at Leo’s quiet, composed grief, something unexpected stirred beneath Julian’s carefully constructed armor: an uncomfortable, hollow pang of guilt.
