Chapter 1: The Weight of Silence

The hum of the university atrium faded into a suffocating quiet. Julian stood frozen, his foot still awkwardly elevated near the wooden bench, his prized limited-edition high-tops suddenly feeling like cheap plastic. His gaze remained locked on the glowing smartphone screen resting on the polished oak table.
Beside Leo on that screen was Arthur Vance—the reclusive titan of the global footwear empire *Vance Heritage*, a man whose rare public appearances commanded Wall Street’s absolute attention.
"You're joking," Julian stammered, his voice stripped of its earlier swagger. "This is photoshop. It has to be. Arthur Vance doesn't have an heir listed anywhere."
"He doesn't have an heir listed in tabloid columns," Leo replied softly, his voice devoid of anger. He wasn't gloating; he was merely stating a fact as mundane as the morning weather. "He wanted me to learn what a dollar was worth before I learned how many he had."
Clara took a tentative step closer, her amber eyes shifting between the unbranded, flawlessly stitched white leather shoes on Leo’s feet and the undeniable familial resemblance in the photograph. "Leo... all this time in design studio, working late shifts at the campus library... you never said a word."
"My father built his first pair of shoes in a garage with torn canvas and borrowed rubber," Leo said, looking down at his plain sneakers. "He always told me that the moment you wear a brand to prove your worth, you've already lost it."
Julian pulled his foot down, the metal chain on his jeans rattling against the bench leg. A flush of embarrassment crept up his neck, burning hot. He wanted to lash out, to salvage whatever shredded dominance he had left in front of Clara and the gathering crowd, but the stillness in Leo’s posture made any outburst seem pathetic.
"Whatever," Julian muttered, adjusting his leather jacket with trembling fingers. "Having a rich dad doesn't make you a designer. Let's see what you bring to the National Innovation Showcase next month."

As Julian turned and walked away with hurried, uneven steps, Clara remained. The morning sunlight bathed the atrium in warm gold, yet a heavy question lingered in the air between them.
