Chapter 3: Shadows of Privilege

Across town, in an immaculate glass-and-steel penthouse overlooking the river, Julian paced furiously across imported marble floors. His father, Richard Hayes, the ruthless venture capitalist who funded Julian’s extravagant lifestyle, sat at an antique desk reviewing quarterly earnings.

"You let yourself get humiliated by Arthur Vance’s hidden kid?" Richard asked without looking up from his tablet, his voice cold and analytical.

"I didn't know!" Julian snapped, throwing his jacket onto a designer sofa. "He’s been walking around campus like a scholarship student for three years. He dresses in plain tees and thrift jeans. It was a setup."

"It wasn't a setup; it was discipline," Richard countered, finally raising his eyes. "Arthur Vance has always operated from the shadows. That old man controls forty percent of the domestic retail distribution. Our firm has been trying to secure a licensing partnership with Vance Heritage for three years."

Julian froze. "You want to work with them?"

"I want their distribution network," Richard corrected sharply. "And the annual Innovation Showcase is where Arthur evaluates external design talent. You were supposed to win that showcase with the smart-sneaker prototype our engineering team developed for you. If Vance’s son is competing under his own merits, you won't just look like a fool on campus—you’ll cost our family twenty million dollars in investment collateral."

Richard stood up, towering over his son with an icy, unforgiving glare. "Fix this, Julian. Do whatever it takes to win that showcase, or find another roof to sleep under."

The weight of his father’s conditional love pressed down on Julian like a lead blanket. Outside, the city lights flickered, cold and unfeeling. For the first time in his life, Julian felt truly cornered, not by an enemy, but by the very expectations that defined his existence.
