Chapter 10: The Fall of Arrogance

The host announced the final round of live demonstrations. Julian took the stage first under blinding spotlights, the audience erupting into applause as the dynamic video presentation played on the massive screens behind him.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Julian began, projecting practiced charisma. "The *Aether-1* is not just footwear; it is your digital identity in motion. Step-sync technology, real-time kinetic harvesting, and social integration."
He motioned for his live tester—a collegiate athlete—to lace up the shoes and run on the high-speed treadmill set up on center stage.
For the first three minutes, the demonstration was flawless. The digital readouts synced in real time, projecting dynamic metrics across the arena screens. Richard Hayes smiled smugly from the VIP gallery.
Then, the high-pitched whine returned.
The athlete suddenly grimaced, slowing his pace. "Hey, it’s getting hot," the athlete muttered through his wireless mic.
"Keep running," Julian whispered desperately off-mic, gesturing with a forced smile. "Show the kinetic charging."
A sudden pop echoed through the speakers, followed by a wisp of acrid white smoke pouring from the heel of the left sneaker. The athlete cried out, stumbling off the moving treadmill as the polymer casing melted against his athletic sock. Panic rippled through the front rows as event staff rushed forward with a fire extinguisher.

Julian stood frozen in the center of the stage, the blinding stage lights illuminating the sheer ruin of his father’s engineered lie. In the gallery, Richard Hayes stood up, his face darkened with fury, and turned his back on his son, exiting the hall without a backward glance.
