Chapter 13: A New Foundation

Two weeks after the showcase, the headlines had settled. Leo Vance’s adaptive footwear design had secured patent backing and an independent manufacturing grant, officially establishing *Vance Adaptive Labs* as a non-profit subsidiary dedicated to affordable mobility aids.
On a brisk autumn morning, the old brick workshop on the edge of town was quiet. Arthur Vance was at the cutting table, trimming heavy leather hides, when the front bell chimed.
Leo walked in, followed by Julian.
Julian looked entirely transformed. His designer leather jacket and heavy jewelry were gone, replaced by a sturdy denim work shirt, worn jeans, and simple work boots. His posture was no longer defensive or arrogant; it was humbled, watchful, and earnest.
Arthur set down his leather shears, his sharp eyes assessing the young man standing in his doorway.
"Mr. Vance," Julian began, clearing his throat and holding his head up with honest effort. "I don't have a resume that’s worth anything here. But I want to learn what real craftsmanship means. I’ll sweep the floors, haul the rubber scraps, and clean the presses. I don't want a salary. I just want to learn from the bottom up."
Arthur looked at Leo, who offered a subtle, encouraging nod.
The old master craftsman walked around the table, wiping his hands on a shop rag. He pointed toward a massive pile of raw scrap leather in the corner.

"Floor sweeps start at 6:00 AM sharp," Arthur said sternly, though the warmth in his eyes betrayed him. "Grab an apron from the hook, Hayes. Today, you learn how to hold an awl."
