Chapter 12: The Bitter Truth

Backstage, away from the roaring crowd and flashing cameras, Julian sat on an equipment crate in the dark corridor. His hands were shaking violently. His father’s words during their brief phone call in the hallway still burned in his ears: *“You’re on your own, Julian. Don't come back to the firm.”*
Footsteps echoed down the concrete hallway. Julian looked up, expecting security to escort him off the premises.
Instead, it was Leo.
"Come to gloat?" Julian asked, his voice cracking, his head hanging low. "Go ahead. You won. My dad cut me off, my reputation in design is dead before it started, and everyone saw my project literally go up in smoke. Enjoy it."
Leo sat down on an adjacent crate, resting his elbows on his knees. "I didn't come to gloat, Julian. I came to see if you were okay."
Julian scoffed bitterly, though tears threatened the corners of his eyes. "Why do you care? I treated you like garbage. I mocked your clothes, your work, everything."
"You did," Leo agreed quietly. "Because you were terrified that if you weren't winning, your father wouldn't love you. I know that look, Julian. I’ve seen it in the business world my whole life."
Julian choked back a dry sob, burying his face in his hands. The crushing weight of years of living up to an impossible, merciless standard finally cracked wide open. "I don't even know how to build a real shoe, Leo. I don't know who I am without the money."

Leo placed a steady, reassuring hand on his rival's shoulder. "Then today is the first day you get to find out."
