Chapter 9: Whispers of the Past**

Three weeks after Clara’s burial, life in the penthouse began to settle into a new, unfamiliar rhythm. The minimalist, sterile apartment was now littered with coloring books, stuffed animals, and warm blankets. Arthur had converted his expansive home office into a bright, pastel-colored playroom.
One evening, while going through a small wooden memory box Clara had kept at a local shelter locker, Arthur discovered an old, worn journal.
As he turned the yellowed pages, he discovered something that made his blood run cold. Clara had never lost her job due to economic downturns, as he had assumed. Six years ago, shortly after Arthur broke up with her, she had been systematically blacklisted from every design firm and catering company in the city.
One specific entry, dated five years earlier, read:
> *A woman named Evelyn Cross came to my studio today. She told me Arthur was destined for greatness, and that a pregnant nobody from Brooklyn would ruin his career. She threatened that if I ever reached out to him, she would ensure my family lost their apartment. I’m scared. I will leave the city quietly.*
Arthur’s hands trembled with white-hot fury. Evelyn hadn't just been a cold socialite; she had deliberately hunted Clara down, orchestrating her ruin to ensure Arthur remained unattached and malleable for the Cross family's corporate ambitions.

Arthur closed the journal, his eyes turning to steel. He had walked away from corporate greed, but justice was another matter entirely.
