Chapter 2: The Alleyway Truth**

Evelyn slammed her gold-embossed clutch onto the white tablecloth. "Arthur! What on earth are you doing? Touch that child and you'll catch something. Let the manager throw her out into the cold where she belongs."

Arthur didn't hear her. The bustling sounds of Le Petit Étoile faded into a dull drone. All he could see were Clara’s soft, unmistakable hazel eyes mirrored in the child’s tear-streaked face.

"What is your name?" Arthur asked softly, kneeling down until his tailored suit trousers rested directly on the polished marble floor.

"Lily," she whimpered, clutching her rumpled skirt. "Mommy told me to find the man on the magazine cover. She said you would help. She said… she couldn't wake up anymore."

A cold spike of dread pierced Arthur’s chest. "Where is she, Lily? Where is your mother right now?"

"In the cardboard room behind the train yard," Lily sniffled. "She got very cold yesterday."

Arthur stood up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the floor. He pulled out a thick wad of hundred-dollar bills from his wallet, tossed it across the table without looking, and stripped off his heavy cashmere coat, draping it entirely over Lily’s shivering shoulders.

"Arthur! Sit back down right now! My father is watching our merger announcement on the news!" Evelyn hissed, grabbing his sleeve with manicured nails. "If you walk out with this filthy beggar, this wedding is off!"

Arthur stared at Evelyn. For years, he had convinced himself that high-society prestige was the only metric of a successful life. Now, looking at Evelyn’s sneer and Lily’s shivering form, the facade completely shattered.

He gently pulled his arm away from Evelyn's grip. "Then the wedding is off."
