Chapter 7: The Boardroom Coup**

Word spread fast across Wall Street. By Monday morning, the tabloids were plastered with sensational headlines: *“Billionaire Arthur Vance Abandons Elite Gala for Beggar Child,”* and *“Cross Energy Terminates Multi-Billion Merger Following Vance's Public Humiliation.”*

When Arthur walked into the Vance Enterprises boardroom at 10:00 AM, wearing a simple wool sweater instead of his customary bespoke power suit, all twelve board members were already seated. At the head of the mahogany table sat Richard Sterling, the firm’s largest minority shareholder and a close ally of Evelyn Cross’s father.

"Arthur, you’re late," Richard said coldly, sliding a thick legal document across the table. "And frankly, unfit to lead. The Cross deal is dead, our stock plummeted seven percent at the opening bell, and the media thinks you’ve lost your mind over some homeless kid."

Arthur sat down calmly, his demeanor completely devoid of the aggressive hostility he was famous for. "That child is my daughter."

A stunned silence fell over the room. Richard let out a dismissive scoff. "Even if that’s true, she’s a PR disaster. The board has invoked Section 4 of the bylaws. We are calling for an immediate vote of no-confidence to remove you as Chief Executive Officer."

Arthur looked around the table at the men and women whose fortunes he had multiplied tenfold over the past decade. None of them met his gaze. They were calculating quarterly profits, while he was calculating the value of a human soul.

Arthur smiled faintly, took a pen from his pocket, and signed the resignation papers before Richard could even call for a vote.

"Keep the title, Richard," Arthur said, rising from his chair. "I built this company from nothing, and I gave it my life. But I’m done trading my soul for your stock price. From today on, I work for my family."
