Chapter 8: The Price of Greed

Armed with the digital evidence, Mateo didn't immediately go to the police. He knew how deep Julian’s political connections ran. Instead, he initiated a corporate squeeze that began at the New York Stock Exchange.

Within forty-eight hours, Clara’s financial forensic reports were leaked directly to the SEC and the leading financial journals.

By Tuesday morning, headlines across the nation read:
**STERLING EMPIRE BUILT ON FRAUD: OFFSHORE BRIBERY SCANDAL EXPOSED.**

The Sterling Group’s stock plummeted by 64% in a single trading session. Creditors began demanding immediate repayment of hundreds of millions in loans. Banks froze Julian’s personal assets, seizing his yacht, his penthouse, and his private jet.

Panicked and cornered, Julian stormed into the City Hall press room to hold an emergency defense briefing. But as he stepped up to the podium, the double doors at the back of the room swung open.

Mateo Cruz walked in, dressed in a sharp tailored dark suit, flanked by federal prosecutors and two uniformed FBI agents.

Julian gripped the sides of the podium, his knuckles turning white. "This is a witch hunt! Cruz is a common construction worker trying to extort my family's legacy!"

Mateo stopped ten feet from the podium. He pulled an official federal seizure warrant from his jacket and held it up for the cameras to capture.

"Julian Sterling, by order of the United States District Court, all assets of Sterling Global Enterprises have been placed into federal receivership," Mateo announced with icy composure. "Furthermore, a warrant has been issued for your arrest on charges of corporate fraud, racketeering, and conspiracy to commit aggravated arson."

The flashbulbs went off like a wall of lightning.

Julian looked around frantically for his security guards, but they were already in handcuffs near the side exit. When the FBI agents stepped forward and clicked the steel cuffs around Julian’s wrists, the disgraced heir let out a sound that was half-sob, half-scream.
