Chapter 10: The Foundation Stone

A year had passed since the night the chandeliers went dark at Villa Belle Reve.

Today, the atmosphere at Harbor Bay was completely transformed. The sweet smell of fresh pine and drying concrete filled the crisp morning air. Where the burned-out ruins of Warehouse 4 once stood, a stunning, light-filled structure now rose toward the sky—The Gabriel Cruz Community Center.

Thousands of local residents had gathered for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Children ran through the freshly planted park, their laughter echoing off the modern glass facades of the new affordable apartment complexes behind them.

Mateo stood near the main stage, wearing his favorite blue polo shirt and dusty work boots. Despite controlling an enterprise worth hundreds of millions, he still refused to wear suits unless forced into a courtroom.

Frank Dawson walked up to him, wiping a tear from his weathered cheek.

"Your dad would be proud, Mateo," the old man said, his voice thick with emotion. "He used to tell us that a true city isn't measured by how tall its luxury towers are, but by how well it protects its most vulnerable workers."

Mateo smiled, clasping Frank’s hand tightly. "He built the dream, Frank. We just poured the concrete."

Clara took the stage, addressing the cheering crowd through the microphone: "Today, we don't just open a building. We dedicate a home built by the people, for the people, that can never be bought, stolen, or taken away again!"

As the crowd erupted in thunderous applause, Clara signaled toward Mateo to join her.

Together, they laid the final cornerstone into the entrance wall. Carved into the polished granite were five simple words that would stand for generations:
