Chapter 13: The New Apprentices

Three years later, the Haven Vocational Academy held its inaugural graduation ceremony. Forty-five young men and women—many from troubled backgrounds or low-income families—stood proudly in their navy blue graduation gowns, holding certified trade diplomas in electrical engineering, advanced carpentry, and sustainable architecture.
Mateo stood at the back of the auditorium, refusing to sit in the VIP row. He preferred watching from the shadows, letting the students have their moment in the spotlight.
A young man named Leo, who had grown up in the rough harbor tenements, walked up to the podium to deliver the valedictorian speech.
"Four years ago, people looked at kids like me and saw a lost cause," Leo spoke clearly into the microphone. "We were told that without family wealth or elite connections, our future was already decided. But then Mr. Cruz and Ms. Montgomery gave us something more powerful than charity—they gave us tools, knowledge, and respect."
Leo held up a gleaming steel hammer, the official gift given to every graduating apprentice.
"They taught us that building something with your own two hands is the most honorable thing a human being can do. We are not just building houses; we are rebuilding our community from the inside out."
The auditorium erupted into cheers and standing ovations.
Mateo felt a quiet warmth spread through his chest. He looked up at the ceiling beams of the auditorium—solid Douglas fir, perfectly aligned, built to withstand any storm.
