Chapter 2: The Fall of the House of Sterling

"It's fake! It has to be fake!" Julian screamed, the veneer of aristocratic charm peeling away into pure hysteria. He grabbed Clara’s arm, but she recoiled, stepping back into the sea of guests who were already taking out their phones to record the spectacle.

Mateo reached into his pocket and pulled out a simple wooden key—hand-carved, weathered by decades of salt and sea breeze. It was the master skeleton key to the entire four-story estate. He walked past Julian without a second glance, stepping directly to the central electrical panel hidden behind the ballroom's gilded tapestry.

With a single turn of the master key and a flip of the main breaker, the sparkling crystal chandeliers died.

Gasps and shrieks echoed in the dim afternoon light filtering through the floor-to-ceiling French doors. The upbeat string quartet stopped playing instantly.

"The party is over," Mateo announced, his deep voice carrying effortlessly across the cavernous room. "Catering staff, valet drivers, and service crew—you will all receive full pay for today, plus a five-hundred-dollar bonus courtesy of Cruz Enterprises. Please collect your things and clock out."

A quiet cheer erupted from the kitchen staff waiting near the service entrance. The waiters immediately set down their silver platters, stripping off their white gloves with satisfied smiles.

Julian stood alone in the center of the dimming room, the red petals under his feet resembling drops of dried blood. His closest business partners were already slipping quietly toward the front exit, avoiding eye contact to protect their own reputations.

"Mateo... wait," Clara said softly, stepping forward. Her diamond engagement ring sparkled faintly in the shadows. "Julian didn't know. His father kept secrets from everyone. We can negotiate. We can pay whatever rent you want."

Mateo turned to look at Clara. His expression wasn't angry; it was heavy with deep, quiet sorrow.

"Some debts cannot be paid in cash, Miss Montgomery," Mateo replied softly. "Your fiancé didn't just forget the rent. He forgot his humanity."
