Chapter 14: The Return of the Rose

That evening, a special gala was held inside the Villa Belle Reve Cultural Center. But unlike the shallow, arrogant party thrown by Julian Sterling four years earlier, this room was filled with real diversity and genuine joy: teachers, dockworkers, doctors, city planners, and local families celebrating the anniversary of the Haven Project.

Mateo stood near the grand entrance, greeting guests as they arrived.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors opened, and a small delivery boy in a clean work uniform walked in, carrying an enormous bouquet of vibrant, deep-red velvet roses.

The room chuckled softly at the nostalgic sight.

The boy walked straight up to Mateo, holding out the flowers with a respectful smile. "Delivery for Mr. Mateo Cruz."

Mateo smiled warmly, taking the heavy bouquet with both hands. "Thank you, young man."

Attached to the ribbon was a small handwritten card. Mateo opened it:

> *"A bouquet of roses was once crushed on this floor out of arrogance. Today, let these bloom as a symbol of humility, labor, and justice. Thank you for showing me what true strength looks like.*
> *— J.S. (Federal Minimum-Security Camp, Oregon)"*

Mateo looked at the card for a long moment, a subtle smile touching his lips. Even in the coldest prisons, the human heart could learn to heal if given the light of truth.

Mateo walked over to the center table and placed the bouquet in a grand crystal vase, letting the deep red petals fill the room with their sweet, delicate fragrance.
