Chapter 5

The return to the estate that evening felt like walking into a tomb. The heavy iron gates swung open automatically, their familiar metallic groan signaling their arrival. Arthur parked the car in the sprawling cobblestone courtyard, and he and Lily walked up the grand stone steps. As they pushed open the front doors, the oppressive silence of the foyer greeted them. There was no sign of Clara in the sitting rooms, but Mrs. Gable was waiting near the base of the staircase, her expression grim and unyielding.

"Mrs. Vance is in her study," Mrs. Gable announced before Arthur could even remove his coat. "She requested your presence immediately upon your return, Mr. Arthur. Alone."

Arthur looked down at Lily, who instinctively clutched the hem of his grey suit jacket. He crouched down to her eye level, offering a gentle smile. "Go on upstairs to your room, sweetheart. Wash your hands, and I’ll be up to read you a story in a little while."

Lily nodded timidly, casting a fearful glance toward Mrs. Gable before scurrying up the stairs. Once she was out of sight, Arthur stood up and faced the housekeeper. "Thank you, Mrs. Gable. I'll go see her now."

Walking down the dimly lit hallway toward Clara’s private study, Arthur felt his pulse quicken. He knocked once and entered without waiting for an invitation. The room was lined with dark mahogany bookshelves and heavy velvet drapes that blocked out the night. Clara sat behind an ornate antique desk, illuminated by the green glow of a classic banker's lamp. She was reviewing a stack of documents, her expression glacial.

"You think you can disrupt my household, take my daughter out without permission, and face no consequences?" Clara didn't look up as she spoke, her voice cutting through the quiet room like a scalpel.

Arthur walked over to the desk, resting his hands on the back of a leather armchair, remaining standing to assert his presence. "Lily is my daughter too, Clara. And I will not allow you to treat her like a prisoner or a servant in her own home."

At that, Clara slowly raised her head. Her eyes were hard, devoid of any warmth or remorse. "She is a charity case we took in to polish our public image. You let sentimentality cloud your judgment, Arthur. But you forget who holds the cards here. This morning, I spoke with our financial advisors. Your personal corporate accounts, the ones you use for your independent tech ventures, have been frozen pending a review of marital assets."

Arthur felt a sudden cold rush in his chest. Clara had moved faster than he anticipated. "You had no legal right to freeze those accounts."

"In this state, when a spouse initiates financial recklessness and domestic disruption, I have every right to protect our estate," Clara replied smoothly, standing up to face him. She walked around the desk, closing the distance between them. Despite the height difference, she radiated an intimidating authority. "You want to play the hero, Arthur? Go ahead. But you will find yourself bankrupt, socially ostracized, and legally barred from seeing Lily within a week if you cross me again. Now, pack a bag and spend the night in the guest suite. I don't want to look at your face."

Arthur looked down at his wife, recognizing the venomous trap she had laid for him. But instead of showing anger, a calm, chilling clarity settled over him. Clara thought she had won. She didn't know that Marcus was already auditing the family trusts. He turned away without a word, leaving her standing in the dark study, confident in her temporary victory.
