Chapter 11

The city apartment was everything the estate had not been: warm, vibrant, and filled with genuine life. Located in a quiet, tree-lined neighborhood, the three-bedroom residence featured soft neutral tones, large windows that flooded the rooms with natural light, and a cozy living area centered around a modern gas fireplace. Marcus had helped secure the property on short notice, ensuring it was fully furnished and stocked before their arrival.

Arthur sat at the polished wooden kitchen island, sipping a cup of hot coffee while watching Lily color a picture at the dining table. The little girl wore a bright yellow dress—a sharp departure from the monotonous beige uniforms Clara had forced upon her. Every movement Lily made now carried a newfound ease, a relaxed posture that spoke volumes about her healing process.

The front door chimed softly, and Marcus stepped into the apartment, carrying a stack of legal documents under his arm. He wore his usual tailored wool coat, but his expression was relaxed, a rare sight given the high-stakes legal battles they had just navigated.

"Morning, Arthur. Morning, Lily," Marcus greeted cheerfully, setting his briefcase on the counter.

"Good morning, Uncle Marcus!" Lily chimed brightly, holding up a drawing of a smiling sun and a house. "Look what I drew!"

Marcus walked over, admiring the artwork with genuine enthusiasm. "That is magnificent, Lily. I think you’re a better artist than I am." He chuckled, tossing a small bag of pastries onto the island. "Brought croissants from the bakery down the street."

Arthur slid a cup of coffee across the counter to his friend. "Thanks, Marcus. How are things looking on the legal front? Has Clara’s camp signed off on the final custody and property transfer?"

Marcus took a seat, opening his briefcase and pulling out a certified set of documents stamped with court seals. He slid them across the granite countertop toward Arthur. "It’s officially over, my friend. Clara’s legal team realized that fighting the federal exposure would destroy their entire family dynasty. They signed the final settlement papers late last night. You have sole, unconditional custody of Lily, and the city apartment, along with your independent venture accounts, are fully unencumbered and legally transferred to your name."

Arthur let out a long breath he felt like he had been holding for days. The weight of the past weeks finally lifted from his shoulders completely. "And Clara?"

"She’s retreating from public life," Marcus said, taking a bite of a croissant. "Rumor has it she’s taking an extended trip to Europe to 'focus on her philanthropic endeavors'—code for licking her wounds in private and avoiding any further regulatory scrutiny. Her father’s foundation is quietly liquidating assets to pay back the discrepancies before federal auditors dig any deeper. She won't be bothering you or Lily ever again."
