Chapter 3

Morning light brought no warmth to the grand estate. Arthur woke early, the weight of the previous night pressing heavily on his chest. He made his way down the sweeping staircase, his shoes clicking softly against the marble. In the kitchen, the domestic staff moved with a fearful efficiency, their heads bowed, avoiding eye contact. Clara had already departed for an early morning committee meeting, leaving an atmosphere of suppressed tension in her wake.
Arthur found Lily sitting quietly at the kitchen island, picking at a bowl of fresh fruit that the cook had hastily prepared. The little girl looked up, her dark eyes wide with apprehension. She wore a simple beige dress that mirrored the one Clara favored, a stylistic choice Clara had enforced to present a uniform family aesthetic in public. Arthur pulled up a stool beside her, offering a reassuring smile that did not quite reach his eyes.
"Good morning, sweetheart," Arthur said softly, taking her small hand in his. "Did you sleep well?"
"I had a bad dream," Lily whispered, her gaze dropping to the countertop. "I dreamed the house was made of ice, and we were locked inside."
Arthur’s heart ached. The metaphor was too painfully accurate. "You don't have to worry about the ice, Lily. I told you, I’m going to take care of you. Today, we are going to do something different. Just you and me."
"Where are we going?" she asked, a flicker of curiosity softening her tense features.
"We’re going to the park in the city, and then we’re going to get ice cream. Whatever flavor you want."
Lily’s face lit up with a tentative smile, a reminder of how resilient children could be when shown even a fraction of genuine love. But as Arthur prepared to leave, the household manager, Mrs. Gable, approached him with a tight, nervous expression. Mrs. Gable had served the family for decades, loyal to Clara’s lineage above all else.
"Mr. Arthur," Mrs. Gable said, keeping her voice low. "Mrs. Vance left strict instructions regarding Miss Lily’s schedule. There are piano lessons at two, followed by etiquette tutoring at four. If you disrupt her routine, Mrs. Vance will be most displeased upon her return."
Arthur looked at the older woman, seeing not just a loyal employee, but an enforcer of Clara’s tyrannical system. "Mrs. Gable, the schedule is canceled for today. My daughter is going to the park."
Mrs. Gable blinked in genuine shock. Such blatant defiance of Clara’s rules was unprecedented in this household. "Sir, you don’t understand—"
"I understand perfectly," Arthur interrupted, his tone leaving no room for argument. "And if Mrs. Vance has an issue with it, she can discuss it with me directly."

With that, Arthur led Lily out of the kitchen, feeling the heavy gaze of the staff burning into his back. It was a small victory, but as they drove away from the imposing iron gates of the estate, Arthur knew that Clara’s wrath would be swift and merciless when she returned.
