Chapter 4

The afternoon sun filtered through the grand maple trees of the city park, casting dappled shadows across the grassy lawn. Lily chased a flock of pigeons with a carefree laugh that sounded entirely foreign outside the sterile walls of their home. Arthur watched from a wooden bench, a cup of black coffee in his hand, though his mind was miles away. He knew that taking Lily out for the day was merely a temporary reprieve, a band-aid on a festering wound. Clara’s control over their lives was deeply entrenched, woven into the legal, financial, and social fabric of their existence. If he was going to protect Lily permanently, he needed a strategy.
A familiar figure approached the bench, casting a shadow over Arthur. It was Marcus, Arthur’s oldest friend and corporate attorney, who had managed to track him down via phone. Marcus slipped onto the bench beside him, adjusting his tailored wool coat against the crisp autumn breeze.
"You skipped the quarterly board meeting this morning, Arthur," Marcus said, his tone a mix of concern and professional warning. "That’s not like you. And your secretary said you cancelled all afternoon appointments."
Arthur took a slow sip of his coffee. "I had more important matters to attend to."
"Clara called me about an hour ago," Marcus continued, watching Lily chase another bird. "She was furious. She mentioned something about insubordination, disrupting household schedules, and muttered vague threats about asset restructuring. Arthur, what on earth is going on between you two? Everyone in our circle thinks you have the picture-perfect marriage."
"It’s a facade, Marcus. It always has been." Arthur turned to look at his friend, his expression grave. "Yesterday, I caught Clara treating Lily in a way that no human being, let alone a mother, should ever treat a child. She forced her to eat off the floor like an animal."
Marcus winced, running a hand over his face. "Good God, Arthur. Are you serious?"
"Dead serious. And it’s not the first time. It’s just the first time I caught it." Arthur gripped the paper cup tightly. "I want a divorce. And I want full custody of Lily."
Marcus went silent, processing the massive legal and social implications of Arthur’s demand. "Arthur, you know how Clara operates. Her family retains the most ruthless legal representation in the state. And because the estate and a significant portion of your capital are tied to prenuptial agreements and family trusts controlled by Clara’s father, a custody and divorce battle could get very ugly. She could cut you off financially, and without proof of systemic abuse, family courts often favor the primary caregiver in high-asset cases."
"Then we find the proof," Arthur said firmly. "I want you to help me untangle our finances, secure my independent assets, and document everything happening in that house. I won't let Clara destroy my daughter."

Marcus looked at his friend for a long moment, seeing the absolute determination in Arthur’s eyes. Slowly, the attorney nodded. "Alright. We play it smart. But we have to be invisible until we strike."
