Chapter 10

The rain outside had slowed to a steady, melancholic drizzle by the time Arthur walked back up the grand staircase toward the guest suite. The confrontation in the parlor had ended in a tense, unstable stalemate; Harrison had managed to convince Clara that signing a preliminary custody waiver was the only way to prevent an immediate federal raid. The formal paperwork would take days to finalize, but the psychological battle had been won. Clara had retreated to her study, locking herself inside, broken and defeated.
Arthur unlocked the guest suite door and stepped inside. Lily was sitting cross-legged on the massive bed, clutching her small stuffed rabbit tightly, her little canvas backpack zipped and resting beside her. She looked up anxiously as he entered, her dark eyes searching his face for answers.
"Daddy?" she whispered timidly. "Are we going now?"
Arthur’s heart melted, the harsh tension of the past hour evaporating instantly. He crossed the room, kneeling beside the bed and taking her small hands in his. A genuine, warm smile finally broke across his face.
"Yes, sweetheart," Arthur said softly, his voice full of promise. "We’re leaving right now. We’re going to our own home, where it’s warm, and safe, and nobody will ever make you feel small again."
Lily’s face lit up with a brilliant, radiant smile—the first true smile Arthur had seen in months. She threw her arms around his neck, burying her face in his tailored grey suit jacket. Arthur held her tightly, closing his eyes as a wave of profound relief washed over him. The gilded cage they had lived in was finally behind them.
Ten minutes later, carrying Lily’s small backpack in one hand and holding her small hand in the other, Arthur walked down the sweeping staircase for the very last time. The domestic staff watched from the shadows of the foyer, silent and wide-eyed. None of them tried to stop him. Mrs. Gable stood near the front door, her expression unreadable, but she did not utter a single word of protest as Arthur pushed the heavy double doors open.
The cool autumn air hit their faces as they stepped out onto the stone portico. The grey sky overhead was beginning to break, letting faint shafts of golden sunlight pierce through the clouds. Arthur opened the passenger door of his car, gently lifting Lily inside and buckling her seatbelt securely.

As he walked around to the driver's side and slid behind the wheel, he took one last look at the imposing estate in the rearview mirror. The grand windows reflected the pale autumn sun, looking cold and empty. He started the engine, putting the car into gear, and drove down the long cobblestone driveway, passing through the iron gates without looking back.
