Chapter 9 - Underground Secrets

The smartphone screen flickered, casting a pale, ghostly light across Clara’s tear-streaked face. She stood frozen in the red-lit corridor of the federal building, clutching Leo tightly against her chest as the impossible words echoed from the speaker.

"David... you're alive?" Clara choked out, the syllables catching in her throat as a turbulent wave of grief, betrayal, and overwhelming relief crashed over her. "How could you let me mourn you for five years? Do you know what I went through? Do you know the hell Elena and her family put us through?"

David’s image on the screen winced, his dark eyes filled with a deep, sorrowful regret. "I didn't have a choice, Clara. The night of the 'accident,' Vance Enterprises' board voted to terminate me because I discovered they were using our civilian logistics infrastructure to traffic black-market military hardware overseas. Thomas planted a bomb in my car. I managed to jump out seconds before impact, but their security teams were hunting me. If I had come home to you, they would have killed both of you to ensure my silence."

Leo stirred in Clara’s arms, blinking up at the glowing phone screen. "Daddy?" he whispered, his childish voice trembling with awe as he recognized the face he had only ever seen in old photographs framed on their mantelpiece.

David’s expression softened instantly, a tear slipping down his cheek on the live feed. "Hey there, my big boy. I'm so sorry I've had to watch you grow up through a lens. But we are almost at the end of this nightmare."

"What do you mean, the end?" Clara demanded, her voice hardening as her survival instincts reasserted themselves over her emotional shock. "Elena was arrested an hour ago, and Thomas is currently unconscious back in the interrogation room. The board is falling apart."

"Elena and Thomas are just the public faces of the hydra," David warned, leaning closer to the camera lens as the background hum of server racks grew louder. "The real power behind Vance Enterprises isn't in the penthouse or the boardrooms. It’s an umbrella syndicate known as the Obsidian Consortium. They control the Zurich vault, the off-grid satellites, and half of the federal oversight committee."

David tapped a sequence on a keyboard off-screen, and Clara’s phone buzzed as a secure data packet downloaded automatically.

"I've sent you the blueprint of the underground facility beneath Grand Central," David said urgently. "You need to bring the encrypted ledger you secured from Elena's office down here. It’s the master key to freeze the Consortium's global accounts permanently. But you have to hurry. They know I'm broadcasting, and their strike team is already moving toward my location."

Before Clara could answer, a thunderous explosion echoed from the upper floors of the federal building, shaking dust from the ceiling tiles and plunging the hallway into total darkness.
