Chapter 11 - The Subterranean Trap

The beam of Clara’s tactical flashlight danced across the damp, moss-covered brick walls of the abandoned mail tunnel. The fresh bootprints in the soot grew deeper and more defined, confirming her worst fear: a Consortium strike team had already infiltrated the subterranean route ahead of them.
"Clara, can you hear me?" David’s voice hissed from the smartphone in her hand, heavily distorted by static and underground interference. "They're jamming the local frequencies. If you can hear this, stop moving. You're walking right into an interception zone."
Clara froze instantly, lifting her left hand to signal Leo to stay completely silent. She extinguished the flashlight, plunging them into absolute, pitch-black darkness, relying only on the faint, amber glow of distant subway indicator lights filtering down through the ventilation grates far above.
"David, I see their tracks," Clara whispered into the phone, pressing the device close to her lips. "They're ahead of me in the tunnel. How far am I from your server room?"
"Less than five hundred yards," David replied, his voice breaking up into a sharp digital whine before stabilizing. "There's a maintenance junction up ahead. Take the left pipe conduit—it bypasses the main security corridor where they've planted motion sensors."
Clara crept forward with agonizing slowness, her boots gliding silently over the damp concrete. Every breath felt deafening in the enclosed space. She hoisted Leo higher onto her hip, feeling the boy’s steady, rhythmic breathing against her collarbone.
Suddenly, a sharp, metallic click echoed through the darkness just ten yards ahead of them.
Tripwire.
Clara stopped dead in her tracks, her heart leaping into her throat. A faint, crimson laser diode blinked to life inches from the floor, casting a razor-thin red line across the tunnel walls. Beyond the tripwire, a cluster of Claymore-style directional mines was mounted against the brickwork, their detonator wires leading directly into the shadows.
"Clever little rats," a cold, unfamiliar voice echoed from the darkness ahead, bouncing off the damp stone walls. "We knew you'd come crawling down here to find your ghost of a husband, Mrs. Miller."
From the shadows, a tall figure stepped into the faint amber light leaking from a ventilation grate. It was a woman wearing a heavy tactical vest adorned with Obsidian Consortium insignia, her face obscured by a dark ballistic mask. In her gloved hand, she held a remote detonator with a blinking green LED light.

"Step away from the conduit, Clara," the operative said, her voice dripping with venomous amusement. "Or I turn this entire tunnel into your family tomb."
