Chapter 5 - Darkness in the Bureau

The sudden loss of power plunged the federal field office into an eerie, suffocating silence. The hum of the computer servers died down, replaced only by the distant wail of sirens outside on the rainy New York streets. Clara Miller froze, her instincts screaming a silent warning as the hair on the back of her neck stood up.

"Stay down!" Agent Marcus Vance barked, drawing his service weapon from its holster with a sharp metallic scrape. He moved swiftly toward the corner where young Leo was sleeping, positioning his body defensively in front of the cot.

Clara didn't hesitate. In the pitch-black room, her tactical training took over. She slid off her chair, keeping low to the floor, and crept toward the heavy metal door. The electronic keypad on the wall—normally glowing with a green authorization light—was completely dark, meaning the heavy security door was locked in its default fail-secure position.

"The power didn't fail," Clara whispered urgently through the dark. "A grid bypass like this requires local substation manipulation. Someone inside the bureau just flipped the manual breaker."

Suddenly, the small security camera mounted in the upper corner of the room sparked, a tiny arc of blue electricity snapping before the lens went completely black. Footsteps echoed heavily down the concrete corridor outside—slow, deliberate, professional. Not the panicked running of bureaucrats, but the calculated cadence of trained operatives.

"Marcus," Clara breathed, her hand gripping the cold metal leg of the interrogation table. "They aren't here to rescue Elena. They're here to erase the server logs in evidence room B, and we are standing right in their path."

Marcus cocked his gun, the sound magnified in the claustrophobic space. "The backup generator should kick in within sixty seconds. We just need to hold position."

"Sixty seconds is an eternity for professional cleaners," Clara replied.

A sharp, metallic tap echoed against the door, followed by the hiss of a pneumatic cutting torch biting into the steel hinges. Sparks rained against the frosted glass of the door’s observation window, casting a fierce, blinding orange glow that illuminated the room in erratic flashes.

Leo stirred behind Marcus, letting out a small, frightened whimper. "Mommy? What's happening?"

"Stay behind the marshal, baby. Close your eyes and cover your ears," Clara whispered fiercely, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.

With a deafening shriek of tearing metal, the heavy door gave way, crashing inward onto the linoleum floor. Through the swirling smoke and blinding shower of sparks, a tall figure in tactical black gear stepped into the room, raising a suppressed firearm directly toward Marcus’s position.

Clara lunged forward without a second thought, grabbing the heavy metal coffee pitcher from the table and hurling it with all her might at the intruder’s visor, just as the backup generator roared to life and the harsh fluorescent lights flickered back on to reveal an impossible sight.
