Chapter 4 - The Hidden Vault

The harsh fluorescent lights of the federal field office buzzed overhead, casting long, tired shadows across the metal interrogation table. Clara Miller sat upright on a hard plastic chair, a cup of lukewarm black coffee cooling between her palms. Leo was fast asleep on a folding cot in the corner, wrapped in an oversized federal marshal’s jacket, his gentle breathing the only peaceful sound in the room.
The heavy steel door swung open, and Agent Marcus Vance walked in, carrying a thick manila folder stamped with red confidential seals. He dropped it onto the metal table with a dull thud.
"You delivered a devastating blow tonight, Clara," Marcus said, pulling out a chair and sitting down heavily. "The asset freeze held. The board members are already pointing fingers at each other, and Elena is currently refusing to speak without her high-priced legal team."
"She’ll realize soon enough that her lawyers can't bill a frozen trust," Clara replied, taking a cautious sip of the bitter coffee. "Have you accessed the main server room at the corporate headquarters yet?"
Marcus leaned forward, resting his forearms on the table. His expression was grim, devoid of any celebratory relief. "That’s the problem. We secured the physical servers, but the core database—the offshore vault containing the real leverage—was routed through a secondary proxy server five minutes before our raid. And that proxy isn't registered in New York. It's routed out of Zurich."
Clara’s heart skipped a beat. She set the coffee cup down with a sharp clink. Zurich. That meant Elena still had access to a subterranean fund, enough liquid capital to disappear, bribe officials, or orchestrate a retaliatory strike against the people who exposed her.
"Elena didn't build that Zurich vault," Clara murmured, pieces of an old puzzle suddenly snapping together in her mind. "Her father left it sealed. He told everyone it was empty, a relic of an old merger."
"Well, it’s not empty," Marcus said, sliding a printed ledger across the table. "As of two hours ago, fifty million dollars was transferred from that Swiss account into a shell corporation registered under a pseudonym: Aegis Holdings. Do you recognize that name?"
Clara stared at the paper. The blood drained from her face as she read the founding date of Aegis Holdings—the exact day her husband, David, had died in a suspicious car accident five years ago while auditing Vance Enterprises.
"David..." Clara whispered, her hands trembling as she touched the paper. "He didn't die in an accident. They murdered him because he found the Zurich vault."
Marcus’s eyes widened. "If David found it, then the password to unlock it isn't in Zurich. It’s here. And Elena knows you have it."

Before Marcus could finish his sentence, the overhead lights in the interrogation room flickered violently and died, plunging them into absolute darkness, save for the emergency red exit sign.
