Chapter 3 - The Federal Net Closes

The cool marble floor of the penthouse lobby echoed with the heavy, calculated footsteps of federal marshals. Elena Vance stood paralyzed, her high bun beginning to fray as the gold threads of her designer gown caught on the sharp brass edge of a decorative planter. She watched in disbelief as Agent Marcus Vance—no relation, but a man who had spent three years investigating her corporate maneuvers—walked straight past the weeping socialites and stopped directly in front of her.

"Elena Vance, you are under arrest for securities fraud, corporate espionage, and embezzlement," Agent Vance announced, his voice carrying an icy finality that silenced the entire room.

"This is a mistake! A malicious fabrication by a disgruntled former employee!" Elena shrieked, her voice losing all its aristocratic polish as she snatched her arm away from the agent's reach. "Look at her! She attacked me! She's a criminal!"

Clara Miller paused near the elevator banks, holding Leo’s small, warm hand. She turned her head slowly, looking back at the woman who had tried to ruin her life and silence her permanent inquiries into the company's shady overseas dealings.

"I’m no criminal, Elena. I’m the witness who kept the receipts," Clara said calmly. She looked directly into Agent Vance’s eyes. "The complete financial trail, including the Cayman Island transfers and the forged signatures on the environmental impact waivers, is on the encrypted drive I handed to your junior agent in the stairwell."

Agent Vance nodded curtly, signaling two officers to secure Elena's wrists. The metallic click of handcuffs echoed through the luxury suite like a gunshot. The glittering socialites who had fawned over Elena minutes ago now scattered like frightened pigeons, desperately trying to distance themselves from the disgraced billionaire.

Elena glared daggers at Clara, her eyes burning with a venomous hatred. "You think you've won, Clara? You think a mid-level security director can take down the Vance family legacy? My father built this empire with blood and steel, and it will crush you into dust before the sun comes up!"

"Your father built an empire on lies, and you inherited the arrogance that will destroy it," Clara replied softly. She turned and stepped into the elevator, the heavy steel doors sliding shut between them, cutting off Elena's furious screams.

Downstairs, the night air was crisp and revitalizing. Clara knelt down to adjust Leo’s jacket, letting out a long, shuddering breath that released hours of pent-up terror.

"Are we safe now, Mommy?" Leo asked, his big eyes reflecting the flashing red and blue lights of the police cruisers.

"We are safe, sweet boy," Clara whispered, kissing his forehead. But as she pulled her phone out to check a new notification, an unknown number flashed on the screen with a single chilling text message: She has a backup you don't know about.
