Chapter 8 - The Ghost from the Past

The hiss of the autoinjector filled the smoke-choked room as the green indicator light flashed. Without hesitation, Clara pressed the cold metal tip against Leo’s arm, depressing the plunger. A sharp gasp escaped the boy's lips as the serum flooded his bloodstream, flushing the pale, toxic pallor from his cheeks within seconds. Leo stirred, blinking heavy eyes against the harsh light.

"Mommy...?" Leo whispered, his voice small and confused.

"I've got you, sweetheart. Just keep breathing," Clara breathed, leaning down to press a kiss to his forehead.

She turned her attention back to the autoinjector, seeing enough residual fluid left in the dual-chamber reservoir for a half-dose. She jammed the device against her own thigh, pressing the trigger. A bitter, burning rush surged through her veins, clearing the blinding fog from her brain and stopping the violent pounding in her skull.

Across the room, Thomas Vance slumped heavily against the wall, unconscious from the neurotoxin, while Agent Marcus Vance remained slumped and breathing shallowly near the filing cabinet. Clara knew they only had minutes before the facility's automated security protocols purged the entire wing or sent a cleanup crew to finish what Thomas had started.

Clara scooped Leo up into her arms, ignoring the dull ache in her shoulder and the dried blood on her face. She stepped over Thomas's motionless body and approached the open doorway. The corridor outside was bathed in the eerie red glow of emergency strobes.

As she navigated the labyrinthine hallways of the federal building toward the exit, a soft chime echoed from her pocket. It wasn't a standard text notification or a call alert. It was the distinct, encrypted ping of an independent satellite terminal—a frequency only one person in the world had ever used to communicate with her.

David.

Clara froze in the center of an empty corridor, her breath catching in her throat. She pulled the secure smartphone from her pocket. The screen didn't show a phone number or a contact name. It displayed a live-streaming video feed originating from an unlisted IP address routed deep beneath the streets of Manhattan—specifically, the abandoned subway terminal beneath Grand Central Station.

On the small screen, a flickering camera angle showed a dimly lit underground chamber lined with glowing server racks and old steel filing cabinets. Standing in the center of the room, facing away from the camera in a dark trench coat, was a tall man with posture and build that made Clara’s heart stop entirely.

The man slowly turned around.

It was David. Older, with a thin scar across his cheek, looking directly into the camera lens with calm, sorrowful eyes.

"Hello, Clara," David’s voice whispered through the phone speaker, static hissing slightly around his words. "I'm sorry I had to let you believe I was dead. It was the only way to keep you and Leo alive long enough to tear down the empire from the inside."
