Chapter 9

"Federal agents! Drop your weapons! Nobody move!"

The deafening roar of tactical commands filled the restaurant as half a dozen heavily armed federal agents poured through the shattered front entrance, their assault rifles raised and laser sights painting a grid of crimson dots across the walls and furniture.

The lead suit didn't hesitate. With a violent shove, he hurled Ramon directly into the path of the advancing agents and lunged backward toward the kitchen doors where Elena was already slipping through with the black suitcase.

"Suspect moving toward the rear exit! Cover the alley!" an agent shouted over the chaos, grabbing Ramon as the whimpering man collided with his tactical vest.

Lisa stood frozen in the center of the dining room as the restaurant erupted into organized bedlam. Diners ducked beneath tables, screaming in terror, while agents swarmed the perimeter. Detective Vance pushed his way through the tactical line, his badge held high, his eyes instantly locking onto Lisa standing by the ruined anniversary table.

"Mrs. Santos? Are you hurt?" Vance asked, rushing over to her side and scanning her for injuries.

"I'm fine," Lisa breathed, pointing frantically toward the kitchen doors. "The suitcase! They're taking the suitcase out through the alley! That’s where all the ledgers, the default notices, and the bearer bonds are!"

Vance turned to his team leader. "Take two units around to the rear service exit. Cut off the alley before they reach the getaway vehicle."

Two agents broke away from the main group, kicking open the swinging kitchen doors and vanishing into the shadowy back corridors with weapons drawn.

Ramon was hauled to his feet by a pair of federal agents, his face bruised from the table collision, his pristine blue polo shirt torn at the shoulder. He looked at Lisa with pathetic, tear-filled eyes, his lips trembling as they cuffed his wrists behind his back.

"Lisa... please tell them it was a mistake," Ramon sobbed, his voice cracking hysterically. "I was forced into this! They threatened Maya!"

Lisa stared at him, feeling nothing—no anger, no pity, only an immense, profound emptiness. "Maya wasn't mentioned once until you needed an excuse, Ramon. You sold our life, and you tried to frame me for it. You did this to yourself."

Before Ramon could reply, a deafening crash echoed from the kitchen area, followed by the sharp, unmistakable crack of a gunshot ringing out through the service corridor.
