Chapter 4

The restaurant around them seemed to tilt on its axis as Elena’s words settled into the dense, suffocating air. Lisa stumbled backward, her hip bumping against an empty chair before she caught herself against the edge of the neighboring table. The sheer audacity of the betrayal paralyzed her vocal cords. Frame her. The man who had kissed her forehead every morning before work, who had held her hand through her mother’s funeral, had meticulously constructed a digital paper trail designed to send his own wife to federal prison if his financial house of cards collapsed.

"That's a lie," Ramon stammered, scrambling out of his seat and knocking his chair over backward with a sharp crash that brought the restaurant manager running over from the host stand. "Elena, you're insane. You're twisting everything because I tried to break it off with you!"

The manager arrived, breathless and wide-eyed, looking at the chaos of scattered papers, the overturned chair, and the weeping women. "Is everything alright here, sir? Do we need to call security?"

"Everything is under control," Elena said smoothly, flashing her corporate badge at the manager with practiced authority. "Just a private family matter being resolved. We are leaving now."

The manager hesitated, eyeing Lisa’s tear-stained face and Ramon’s desperate expression, but nodded slowly and retreated a few paces, keeping a watchful eye on the escalating drama.

Lisa ignored the manager entirely. Her vision tunneled until the only things that existed were Ramon’s sweating forehead and the black suitcase resting innocently on the table. All those late nights at the office, all those weekend conferences in other cities, all the polite phone calls she never questioned—every single one of them had been a brick building the wall of this prison.

"You planned this," Lisa said, her voice dropping to a terrifying whisper that made Ramon physically recoil. "Every vacation, every anniversary dinner, every time you told me you loved me—you were just buying time while you emptied our accounts and built a cage for me."

Ramon reached out, his hand trembling as he tried to touch her wrist. "Lisa, please. Just come back to the car. We can talk about this privately. We can fix this."

Lisa wrenched her arm away as if his skin were searingly hot. "Don't you ever touch me again."

Elena hoisted the heavy black suitcase off the table, the leather straps groaning under the strain. She looked at Lisa with a complicated expression that wasn't quite pity, but something far more unsettling—a shared bond forged in the fires of manipulation.

"He already transferred the deed to the vacation cabin into my name this morning," Elena said softly, delivering the final, crushing blow. "And the signature on the deed isn't his. It’s yours. He used the power of attorney you signed last year for your medical emergency to forge the transfer."
