Chapter 3

The crisp sound of the default notice rustling in Lisa’s trembling hands cut through the ambient noise of the dining room like a scalpel. She stared at the bold red lettering at the top of the page, her eyes darting across figures and account numbers that represented the total liquidation of everything she and Ramon had built over fifteen years of marriage. The house where their daughter took her first steps, the college fund they meticulously contributed to every single month, the retirement savings—all of it had been drained, leveraged, and signed away to a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands.

"You didn't just cheat on me," Lisa whispered, the words tasting like ash on her tongue as she looked down at the man she had trusted implicitly. "You erased us."

Ramon flinched, finally finding the courage to meet her gaze, though his eyes were swimming with pathetic self-pity. "The business was failing, Lisa. The market crashed last year and I couldn't dig out of the debt. This was the only way to salvage anything. I was going to set us up abroad."

"Us?" Elena laughed, a short, sharp sound devoid of any humor. She slammed the black suitcase shut with a definitive thud that rattled the remaining water glasses on the table. "He meant him and me, Lisa. You were just the convenient background fixture keeping the house warm while he plotted his exit strategy."

Lisa’s breathing turned shallow and rapid. Her chest heaved beneath the fine fabric of her green dress, the elegant garment suddenly feeling like a straightjacket. She looked at Elena, really looked at her—not as an intruder or a homewrecker, but as someone who possessed an alarming depth of knowledge about the man Lisa thought she knew better than herself.

"Who are you?" Lisa demanded, stepping away from Ramon and closing the distance between herself and the other woman. "How do you have all of this?"

Elena reached into the front pocket again, pulling out a laminated employee ID card and sliding it across the table. The photograph showed Elena with shorter hair, smiling professionally beneath the logo of a forensic accounting firm Lisa recognized immediately as the corporate auditor Ramon’s company had hired last winter.

"I was the lead auditor assigned to his accounts," Elena said evenly, her voice devoid of triumph, carrying only the grim weight of professional duty mixed with personal ruin. "I didn't just find the discrepancies in the ledger, Lisa. I found the emails where he planned to frame you for embezzlement if the fraud investigation ever got too close."
