Chapter 10

The single gunshot silenced the entire restaurant instantly. The chaotic shouting of the federal agents died down into a tense, breathless standoff as everyone turned toward the swinging kitchen doors. Ramon froze in the grip of the agents, his eyes widening in sheer panic. Detective Vance drew his service weapon, holding it across his chest as he motioned for his team to form a protective perimeter around Lisa.
"Hold your fire! Status report!" Vance shouted into his shoulder radio, his voice cutting through the heavy silence.
A crackling static burst from the radio before an agent’s voice replied, breathless and frantic. "Suspect down at the rear service exit! The second suspect is fleeing on foot down the alley toward 6th Street! We lost visual on the black suitcase!"
Vance cursed under his breath and turned to the remaining agents. "Secure the perimeter! Sweep the alley and find that bag—do not let that suitcase leave this block under any circumstances!"
Lisa felt the floor swaying beneath her feet. The black suitcase—the Pandora's box that held every shred of evidence, every legal document, and every dark secret Ramon had accumulated—was now loose in the labyrinthine alleyways of the city, carried by a criminal who knew its true value.
"That bag has everything," Lisa said, grabbing Vance’s sleeve. "If they get away with it, there's no proof of the corporate fraud, no proof of the asset stripping, nothing to stop them from taking our home and our daughter's future."
"We'll find it, Mrs. Santos," Vance said gently, though his furrowed brow betrayed his own concern. He turned to Ramon, who was hyperventilating as the agents prepared to drag him out to the waiting transport vans. "Santos, who was carrying the bag? Who is the second suspect?"
Ramon shook his head frantically, tears streaming down his face. "I don't know! They just gave me instructions through an encrypted app! Elena knew them! Elena was the one who set up the meet!"

"Elena made it out the back door before the shot was fired," Vance muttered, realization dawning on him. "She used you as a decoy, Mr. Santos. She used all of you."
Lisa watched as Ramon was shoved into the back of a black and white cruiser, his head bowed in absolute defeat. But her relief was short-lived. As the police cruiser pulled away from the curb, her phone buzzed violently in her hand with an incoming text message from an unknown number. She unlocked the screen and stared down at a single photo attached to the message. It was a picture of Maya, walking home from her piano lesson, smiling innocently beneath the streetlamps—with a stranger’s shadow looming directly behind her.
