Chapter 5

The words hung in the air like a physical blow. The vacation cabin—the rustic wooden sanctuary by the lake where Lisa’s grandfather had taught her how to fish, the one place on earth where she felt safe and anchored to her family’s history—was gone. Stolen with a flick of a pen and a forged signature executed by the very man who swore to protect her. Lisa stared at Ramon, the man she had loved for half her life, realizing with sickening clarity that the person standing before her was a complete stranger who wore her husband’s face like a cheap Halloween mask.

"You sold the cabin," Lisa whispered, the fight completely draining out of her, leaving behind a hollow, echoing shell. "That was the only thing left of my parents."

Ramon opened his mouth, but no sound came out. His chest heaved as he realized the web of lies had finally snapped under its own weight, leaving him dangling over an abyss of his own making. He looked at Elena, pleading with his eyes for her to stop, but the auditor’s face had hardened back into professional detachment.

"We need to leave, Ramon," Elena said, turning toward the exit with the heavy black suitcase bumping against her thigh. "Your flight boards in six hours. Though I wouldn't bother packing much more. The federal marshals froze your primary offshore accounts twenty minutes ago."

Ramon staggered backward, his knees hitting the edge of the table as the color drained entirely from his face. "What? That's impossible. I moved those funds yesterday."

"Did you really think a mid-level corporate accountant wouldn't know how to track offshore shell companies?" Elena stopped and looked back over her shoulder, a cold, humorless smile touching the corners of her lips. "I helped you set the first one up, Ramon. Did you honestly believe I wouldn't keep the master keys for myself?"

Lisa watched the exchange, her mind racing as the realization hit her with blinding speed. This wasn't just a love triangle or a simple embezzlement scheme. It was an intricate trap where Ramon had tried to outsmart everyone, only to be outmaneuvered by the very woman he brought in as an accomplice. And Lisa, the devoted wife, had been cast in the role of the sacrificial lamb—the patsy designed to take the fall for millions in corporate fraud while Ramon and Elena sailed off to a sun-drenched exile.

"You're both going to jail," Lisa said, her voice steadying as a cold, fierce resolve settled deep into her bones. She reached down, picked up the diamond anniversary box from the table, and calmly dropped it into her own handbag.

"Lisa, listen to me," Ramon pleaded, taking a desperate step forward. "We can work with the authorities. If we cooperate—"

"I am going to cooperate," Lisa interrupted, pulling out her own phone and dialing a number from memory. "I’m calling Detective Vance at the financial crimes division. I have a whole table full of evidence right here."
