Chapter 13

The harsh yellow light from the single overhead bulb illuminated the scattered contents of the black suitcase as Elena ripped the zipper open all the way around. Inside, neatly stacked beneath a false bottom, sat thick bundles of bearer bonds, a digital ledger drive, and the original property deeds bearing the forged signatures that had started the entire nightmare. The man in the dark suit stepped closer, his boots creaking ominously on the damp wood of the boathouse floor, his suppressed pistol still locked steadily on Maya’s trembling frame.

"Good," the suit grunted, his eyes gleaming with greed as he reached out a gloved hand to grab the bearer bonds. "Now, get the girl on her feet. We take her with us as insurance until we clear the county line."

"That wasn't the deal," Elena hissed, stepping defensively in front of the open suitcase. "The deal was the bag for the girl's freedom. I’m not carrying a hostage and a federal target across state lines."

"You don't make the rules anymore, Elena," the man replied coldly, pressing the barrel of the pistol slightly harder against Maya’s temple. "You tried to skim off the top of the Cayman accounts before the board even noticed. You think we're going to leave you here with a bag full of cash and a clear conscience? Move away from the suitcase."

Lisa watched through the crack in the wooden slats, her blood turning to ice. Her fingers found a heavy iron latch hanging loose from the side of the boathouse exterior. Without thinking, she gripped the rusted metal bar, pulled it free from its mount, and prepared to throw herself through the rotting side wall.

Inside, Maya caught movement out of the corner of her eye. The fourteen-year-old girl, terrified yet displaying a sudden, fierce flash of the resilience she inherited from her mother, didn't scream or cry out. Instead, she slammed her heel down hard onto the instep of the armed man’s polished oxford shoe.

The man grunted in surprise, his grip slipping just an inch as he stumbled backward.

"Run!" Elena screamed, not out of heroism, but out of self-preservation, shoving Maya away from the gunman toward the open side door.

Maya bolted like a startled deer toward the shadows of the tree line, right where Lisa was hiding.

"Get her!" the gunman roared, swinging his pistol around to track the fleeing girl.

Before he could pull the trigger, Lisa swung the heavy iron bar with every ounce of strength in her body, smashing through the weathered wooden slats of the boathouse wall directly into the man’s gun hand, sending the pistol clattering into the dark lake water below with a dull splash.
