Chapter 1

The low murmur of the upscale restaurant dining room instantly evaporated the moment the cream-colored fabric of the woman's outfit brushed against the mahogany chair. Elena stood tall, her hair pulled back into a severe bun that accentuated the quiet exhaustion lining her jaw. With methodical slowness, she set the heavy black suitcase directly onto the center of the white tablecloth, letting it rest over the crystal water goblets. Ramon, seated across from Lisa in his dark blue polo shirt, froze mid-breath. His fork hovered an inch above his plate, the polished silver catching the dim ambient lighting like a warning beacon.

Lisa stared at the scarred leather tags dangling from the suitcase handle, her long dark hair falling forward in a heavy curtain as she leaned away from the impact.

"Ramon, bakit nasa kanya ang bag ko?" Lisa asked, her voice trembling slightly as she looked between her husband and the intruder who had just upended their anniversary dinner.

"Sumunod ka," Elena said softly, her voice barely carrying over the distant hum of the kitchen, yet it commanded absolute attention in the tense silence of the table.

Ramon swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing violently beneath the tight collar of his polo shirt. He refused to meet his wife's eyes, staring instead at the scratched plastic buckle of the luggage strap.

"Lisa, just listen to her for a second," Ramon muttered, his voice lacking any of the confident authority he usually carried in public spaces.

Elena reached out, her fingers steady despite the emotional storm raging behind her dark eyes. She flipped open the outer pocket of the black suitcase and pulled out a fistful of crumpled luggage tags and international travel documents. The boarding passes bore Lisa's name, printed clearly alongside a first-class ticket to Geneva, scheduled for departure the following morning at dawn.

"Lisa, ikaw ang hindi tutuloy bukas," Elena said, her tone dropping into a chilling register of absolute finality. "Mas mabuti kung hindi ka na sumama."

Lisa stood up so abruptly her chair shrieked against the polished hardwood floor, drawing the wide-eyed gaze of every diner within twenty feet.

"You have no right to be here," Lisa hissed, pointing a shaking finger at the documents in Elena's hand. "This is private. Ramon, tell her to leave right now or I swear I am calling security."

Elena didn't blink. Instead, she pulled her smartphone from her pocket, the screen illuminating her tear-streaked face in a harsh blue glow. She tapped the glass twice and slid the device across the table, right next to Lisa's untouched dessert plate. The screen displayed a live flight tracking app and a hotel reservation confirmation for two adults in Switzerland. The names on the reservation were Ramon and Elena, booked three months in advance. Lisa looked down at the glowing screen, her breath hitching in her throat as the horrifying truth settled over her chest like a physical weight.
