THE ASHES OF SILENCE: A MOTHER'S CRUEL GIFT AND THE BIRTHDAY THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Evelyn screamed as the thorns pierced her patterned blouse, her body collapsing into the tangled mass of branches.

Clara acted on pure instinct. Instead of running, she lunged forward, grabbing the wooden handle of the shovel before Martha could pull it back for a second strike. The two women grappled fiercely in the dark alcove, panting and straining against each other. Martha was older, but she possessed a sinewy, adrenaline-fueled strength born of decades of dark secrets and bitter control.

"Let go of it, you ungrateful little parasite!" Martha snarled, her face twisted in rage as she shoved Clara backward.

Clara lost her footing on the loose soil and tumbled hard onto her back, hitting her head against a stone border. The world spun violently, and a sharp ringing filled her ears. Through a blur, she saw Martha raise the shovel high above her head, aiming directly downward with lethal intent.

Suddenly, a frail hand shot out from the rose bushes. Evelyn grabbed Martha’s ankle with all her remaining strength and yanked downward.

Martha shrieked as she lost her balance, tumbling sideways into the dirt just inches from Clara. The heavy shovel clattered against the stone border, skidding out of reach into the shadows.

Clara shook her head to clear the dizziness, scrambled across the dirt, and pinned Martha’s arm to the ground with her knee. Her burned finger throbbed furiously, but adrenaline fueled her every movement. She looked down into the face of the woman she had called mother for her entire life.

"It's over, Martha," Clara said, her voice steady and ice-cold. "The game is finished."

Martha didn't struggle anymore. Instead, a chilling smile spread across her face. She tilted her head toward the entrance of the garden, where the distant wail of approaching sirens began to slice through the night air.
