Chapter 2 - The Envelope in the Flames

"Read it if you dare," Martha said, her voice cutting through the night air like broken glass.
Clara stared at the yellowed envelope as the edges began to brown and curl in the intense heat of the fire pit. The pink quilted handbag was already a charred, unrecognizable lump of plastic and metal hardware. Panic surged through Clara’s veins, overriding her shock. Without thinking, she lunged forward, thrusting her bare hand toward the flames to snatch the paper before the fire consumed it entirely.
"Clara, no!" Evelyn gasped, finally finding her voice and lunging to pull Clara back by her shoulders just as the heat scorched the skin of Clara's fingertips.
Clara stumbled backward onto the manicured lawn, clutching her stinging hand against her off-white dress. A small red blister was already forming on her index finger, but the physical pain was nothing compared to the terror gripping her heart. The envelope had not burned completely; a corner of thick, heavy parchment had caught on the metal edge of the fire pit's inner ring, fluttering desperately in the rising thermal draft.
Martha watched the struggle with detached amusement. "You’ve always been reckless, Clara. Jumping into things you don't understand, chasing shadows, and expecting everyone else to clean up your mess."
"What is that letter?" Clara demanded, wincing as she cradled her burned hand. "Why are you doing this on my birthday?"
"Because today you turn twenty-eight," Martha replied coldly, stepping away from the firelight and toward the darkened French doors of the house. "The exact same age your biological mother was when she realized the mistake she had made trusting this family."
Evelyn dropped to her knees beside Clara, ignoring the spilled champagne pooling around her shoes. She looked up at Clara with wide, tear-filled eyes. "Don't listen to her, sweetie. Your mother... your real mother... she loved you."
Clara froze, her breathing catching in her throat. "What are you talking about, Evelyn? My mother is right there." She pointed toward Martha's retreating silhouette.
May you like
Evelyn swallowed hard, her hand trembling as she reached out to touch Clara's arm. "No, Clara. Martha isn't your mother. And that pink bag wasn't a gift from your grandmother at all."
