Chapter 12 - The Trap Closes

It wasn't a bank teller. It was Martha’s personal attorney, Mr. Harrison, flanked by two private security guards in dark suits. He wore an immaculate charcoal suit and a cold, predatory smile that mirrored Martha's exact expression.
"Detective Vance," Harrison said smoothly, stepping into the vault with measured paces. "I see you're moonlighting as a courier for stolen property. I trust you have a warrant to access this private box?"
Vance instinctively stepped in front of Clara, his hand resting on the grip of his service weapon. "Step back, Harrison. This box contains evidence of an active criminal investigation."
"This box contains private family documents protected by a federal injunction issued ten minutes ago by Judge Miller," Harrison replied calmly, pulling a crisp sheet of paper from his leather briefcase and holding it out. "Your precinct commander has already been notified, Detective. Your badge is currently under review for procedural misconduct."
Clara gripped the leather-bound journal tightly against her chest, her heart hammering against her ribs. "You can't have this! This proves she murdered my mother!"
Harrison chuckled softly, a dry, insulting sound. "My dear child, Martha didn't murder anyone. And as for your mother—well, legal definitions of parentage are so terribly flexible when funded by the right estate. Hand over the journal, Clara, unless you want to spend the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security psychiatric ward."
The security guards stepped forward, their massive frames blocking the narrow aisle of the vault. Vance drew his weapon, leveling it at Harrison's chest.
"Back off, Harrison. One step closer and I'll arrest the lot of you for obstruction of justice."
Harrison didn't flinch. He slowly pulled his smartphone from his pocket, tapped the screen twice, and held it up so Clara and Vance could see the live security feed playing on the display.
The screen showed the interrogation room where Clara had been held earlier. On the monitor, Detective Vance could clearly see another officer placing a small plastic bag filled with white powder—illicit drugs—directly into Clara’s abandoned backpack.
"Planted evidence," Vance muttered, his face turning pale with fury.
"Self-defense preservation," Harrison corrected smoothly. "Now, Detective, you can either walk out of this vault right now and keep your pension, or you can go down in history as an accomplice to a deranged drug thief."

Clara looked from the threatening guards to Detective Vance, realizing that the web of corruption went far deeper than she had ever imagined.
