Chapter 4 - The Unwelcome Return

"The joke is over, Clara," Martha announced, stepping down onto the patio with slow, deliberate strides. The light blue dress seemed to swallow the shadows around her, making her look like a phantom in the night.

Evelyn scrambled backward on the grass, her patterned blouse stained with champagne and dirt. "Martha, put that down. We don't need to do this now. The girl knows enough to be dangerous, not enough to ruin everything."

"She knows nothing," Martha retorted, her eyes locked onto Clara's terrified expression. "She only knows what you've foolishly wept into her ear because you never had the stomach for the consequences of our choices."

Clara stood her ground, adrenaline overriding her shock. The burned blister on her finger throbbed with every beat of her pulse. "If you are not my mother, then who am I?" she demanded, her voice echoing off the stone walls of the house. "Why did you raise me? Why keep me close if I am just the child of a woman you hated?"

Martha stopped a few feet away, leaning heavily on the handle of the shovel like an executioner resting on a blade. "Because possession is the ultimate form of control, Clara. Your mother thought she could take my husband, my home, and my future. Instead, I took her child, raised her under my own roof, and let her walk around wearing the very accessories of her downfall."

The horrific truth settled over Clara like a physical weight. Every milestone, every affectionate hug, every gift—it had all been a psychological cage built by a master manipulator.

"Where is she?" Clara asked, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Where is my real mother buried?"

Martha smiled—a cold, humorless stretching of her lips. She raised the shovel and pointed the dirty blade directly toward the dark expanse of the heritage rose garden. "Go look for yourself. But remember, the ground is very hard this time of year."
