Chapter 13 - The Ultimatum

The silence in the vault was suffocating. Detective Vance lowered his service weapon slowly, the metal barrel dropping toward the cold concrete floor as the reality of their impossible situation set in. He looked at Clara, his eyes filled with a mixture of professional defeat and quiet apology.
"I'm sorry, Clara," Vance whispered, his voice tight. "I tried."
"You can't let them win," Clara pleaded, clutching the journal so hard her knuckles turned white. "If they take this, everything is lost."
"If we fight them here, we both end up in a cell, and the evidence gets destroyed anyway," Vance murmured under his breath, stepping aside just enough to signal his compliance.
Harrison smiled triumphantly. He extended his hand toward Clara. "The journal, please. Don't make this any more unpleasant than it already has been. Your mother is waiting for you at home, and trust me, she has planned a very special evening to welcome you back."
Clara stared at Harrison’s outstretched hand. Every instinct screamed at her to run, but there was nowhere to go. The bank vault was a dead end. The guards blocked the exit. The local police force had been compromised at the highest level.
Slowly, deliberately, Clara stepped forward. She placed the heavy leather-bound journal into Harrison’s palm.
Harrison’s smile widened as he gripped the historical document, sliding it neatly into his briefcase alongside the legal deeds. "A wise decision, Clara. Maturity suits you."
"Get out of my sight," Clara said, her voice terrifyingly calm.
Harrison turned on his heel, motioning for the security guards to follow him out of the vault. As they walked away, Harrison tossed a single set of silver keys onto the concrete floor near Clara’s bare feet.
"Your car is waiting outside the lobby," Harrison called back over his shoulder. "Don't keep Martha waiting. She hates being kept in suspense."
The heavy steel door of the vault slammed shut with a resounding echo, plunging Clara and Detective Vance back into the quiet gloom. Vance picked up the keys from the floor and handed them to Clara, his expression grim.
"What are you going to do?" Vance asked quietly.
Clara looked down at the keys, then up at the security camera mounted in the corner of the vault ceiling, realizing that one tiny lens was still blinking with a faint red recording light.

"I'm going home," Clara said softly. "To finish what started on my birthday."
