Chapter 3 - The Shattered Mirror

The revelation hung in the chilly night air, heavier than the smoke rising from the ruined fire pit. Clara looked from Evelyn’s terrified face to the distant glass doors where Martha had vanished into the dimly lit interior of the house. The garden party had dissolved entirely; the remaining guests had slipped away into the darkness, leaving behind only the evidence of a shattered family.

"Stop lying to me," Clara whispered, her voice shaking violently. "I have pictures. I have memories. We look alike."

"We engineered all of it," Evelyn said, her voice barely a whisper as she glanced nervously toward the house. "Every birthday album, every fabricated story, every holiday. Martha adopted you when you were six months old after your real mother... well, after your mother tried to leave this estate with you and that exact pink handbag."

Clara’s mind raced, trying to connect the impossible puzzle pieces. She remembered the pink quilted luxury handbag as a prized possession she had carried everywhere during her college years, a graduation present given to her by Martha with strict instructions never to let it out of her sight. Why would a stolen item from her past be treated with such obsessive care, only to be burned tonight?

"The bag belonged to her," Evelyn continued, pointing a trembling finger at the smoldering remains in the fire pit. "The real owner. The woman Martha buried in the south garden thirty years ago."

Clara staggered back, the breath driven from her lungs as if she had been physically struck. The south garden was a lush, untouched patch of heritage roses that Martha tended to obsessively, a place where no one was ever allowed to dig.

"You're insane," Clara breathed, backing away from Evelyn. "Both of you. This is some kind of sick joke."

Before Evelyn could reply, the back door slammed open with a deafening crash. Martha stood on the threshold, no longer wearing her calm, composed mask. In her right hand, she held a heavy, rusted garden shovel, the steel blade gleaming ominously under the security lights.
