Chapter 1 - The First Spark

"You had no right to do that!" Clara screamed, her voice cracking as the acrid smell of burning synthetic leather filled the damp night air.
"I had every right under this roof," Martha replied, her voice dangerously low, her blue dress catching the amber flicker of the patio fire pit. "That bag was a lie, just like the life you’ve been building behind my back."
"It was a gift from my grandmother!" Clara stepped forward, her off-white halter-neck dress brushing against the stone edge of the patio. "You didn't just burn a bag, Martha. You burned the last piece of family history I had left!"
"Your grandmother would have wept to see what you've become," Martha said, turning her fierce, cold gaze toward Clara. The silence that followed was suffocating, broken only by the crackle of the flames devouring the pink quilted luxury handbag with its melted silver hardware. Across the patio, Evelyn stood frozen, staring at the shattered glass of champagne at her feet, her hand still pressed tightly over her mouth in absolute disbelief.
Clara’s chest rose and fell in shallow, rapid breaths. Just moments before, she had been standing behind her frosted birthday cake, smiling calmly as the white candles cast a warm glow over her face. Now, the festive mood of the garden party was utterly destroyed. Guests whispered in the shadows, too terrified to intervene in the escalating family war. Martha didn't flinch. She watched the pink bag curl and blacken, showing no remorse whatsoever.
Clara looked at her mother, searching the cold blue eyes for a shred of empathy, but found only an icy wall of hatred. "What aren't you telling me?" Clara whispered, her voice dropping to a tremor. "What did that bag have to do with anything?"

Martha stepped closer to the fire, the heat washing over her composed features. She didn't answer immediately. She reached into the pocket of her light blue dress, pulled out a folded yellowed envelope, and tossed it directly onto the burning embers right beside the ruined purse.
