Chapter 8: The Penalty

The federal trial lasted seven grueling months.
Stephen took the witness stand eighty-four times. He sat inside the bulletproof glass dock, facing the furious glares of thirty high-priced corporate defense attorneys and the cold, venomous stares of the Sterling family.
He never flinched. He answered every question with ruthless, unflinching honesty, laying bare his own cowardice, his greed, and the catastrophic consequences of his silence.
On the final day of sentencing, Judge Margaret Holloway delivered the court’s ruling.
Richard Sterling was sentenced to twenty-two years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, and the corporate assets of Sterling BioCorp were seized to create a two-billion-dollar restitution fund for the families of the victims.
When it came time for Stephen’s sentence, Judge Holloway looked down at him over her glasses.
""Stephen Cross, you were entrusted with the most sacred duty known to civilized society: the preservation of human life. You traded that trust for luxury and applause. However, the court recognizes that without your comprehensive, unreserved testimony, this syndicate would have remained untouched.""
The judge slammed her gavel onto the bench.
""You are sentenced to eight years at the Federal Correctional Institution in Allenwood, Pennsylvania, followed by five years of mandatory community restitution. Your license to practice medicine is permanently revoked by the United States Medical Board.""
Stephen stood up, bowed his head to the court, and offered his wrists to the federal marshals.
As they led him away in chains, he looked back across the gallery.

Callie was standing in the last row. She did not smile. She did not wave. But her eyes held a profound, quiet acknowledgment: the debt had finally begun to be paid.
