Chapter 4: The Escape

Stephen did not take a sedative.

At 3:00 AM, while Sterling’s security guards were monitoring the front elevator bank, Stephen slipped out through the service stairwell behind the freight elevators. He descended thirty-six flights of concrete stairs in the dark, his breath ragged in the cold air shaft.

He reached the subterranean basement parking garage, opened the trunk of an old maintenance sedan he had kept under a pseudonym, and threw his bag inside.

As he drove out into the rain-swept streets of Manhattan, his phone began vibrating continuously on the passenger seat with encrypted messages from Victoria:

*WHERE ARE YOU? DAD HAS SEALED THE AIRPORT LOGS. DO NOT GO TO COLD SPRING.*

Stephen didn't answer. He rolled down the window, took the titanium smartphone, and threw it into an open storm drain on 57th Street.

He turned the car north, toward the Taconic State Parkway.

The city fell away behind him, replaced by the towering, rain-slicked rock faces and dark forests of the Hudson Valley.

As the windshield wipers slapped rhythmically against the glass, memories flashed through Stephen's mind like sharp shards of broken mirrors: the humble apartment in Chicago where he and Callie shared a single bowl of instant noodles after thirty-hour surgical rotations; the night they danced in the rain after saving a premature infant in the emergency room; the quiet pride in Callie’s eyes when she looked at him before the checks started arriving.

He had traded a sacred life of healing for tailored suits, private rooftop dinners, and blood-soaked bonuses.

And now, the only person on earth who truly knew the man he used to be was waiting for him with a pen of judgment.
