Chapter 1: The Glass Between Us

The rain lashed against the panoramic glass of *L’Aura*, seventy floors above Manhattan, turning the amber glow of the city below into a bleeding smear of watercolor.
Dr. Stephen Cross stared at the crimson reflection pooling in his crystal goblet of Bordeaux. The small metallic caduceus pinned to the lapel of his bespoke tuxedo caught the ambient candlelight—a silver serpent wrapped around a rod, the universal symbol of healing that he had spent the last five years turning into an instrument of personal ambition.
Opposite him, Victoria adjusted her diamond tennis bracelet, her manicured fingers poised over the mahogany table.
""Callie sent divorce papers,"" Stephen said, his voice barely louder than the murmur of the cello trio near the wine cellar.
Victoria’s emerald eyes flickered. She took a slow, calculated breath, leaning forward just enough for the subtle scent of jasmine to drift across the linen tablecloth.
""Then she knows about us,"" Victoria murmured.
Stephen looked down at his watch—a steel Patek Philippe gifted by Victoria’s father after Stephen approved the fast-tracked clinical trial permits for Sterling BioCorp. His jaw tightened until the tendons in his neck felt like drawn bowstrings.
He slowly lifted his eyes to meet hers.
""No,"" Stephen said, the words falling like lead weights into the space between them. ""She knows everything.""
Victoria’s glass stopped halfway to her lips. ""What do you mean, *everything*?""
""She didn't just hire a private investigator to follow us to the Hamptons, Victoria,"" Stephen whispered, the blood draining from his lips. ""She subpoenaed the server logs from the pediatric oncology research archives at St. Jude's. She has the unredacted patient mortality disclosures from Phase II. The ones your father paid me six million dollars to bury.""
The glass in Victoria’s hand slipped, clinking sharply against the silver dessert fork.

Outside, a jagged fork of lightning split the black Atlantic sky over the harbor, illuminating the terror hidden beneath her porcelain smile.
