Chapter 3: The Midnight Flight

Back in Manhattan, the penthouse on Central Park West was bathed in frantic, chaotic shadows.

Stephen tore through his mahogany dressing room, throwing encrypted flash drives, passports, and Swiss banking tokens into a leather duffel bag. His bespoke suit was discarded on the floor, replaced by a dark wool sweater and heavy winter coat.

The front door chimed.

Richard Sterling—the seventy-year-old chairman of Sterling BioCorp—stepped into the foyer without knocking. He wore a heavy shearling overcoat, his silver hair uncombed, his cold eyes burning with predatory fury. Behind him stood two private corporate security guards in dark suits.

""Where do you think you're going, Stephen?"" Sterling asked, his voice low and dangerous.

""She filed with the Southern District, Richard!"" Stephen shouted, his hands shaking violently as he tried to zip the bag. ""Callie didn't go to the press. She went to the Department of Justice! The FBI is unsealing the wiretap warrants at eight o'clock tomorrow morning!""

Sterling took two slow, measured steps forward, tapping his gold-headed cane against the marble floor.

""If you run, you look guilty, doctor,"" Sterling said coldly. ""My legal team can tie a whistleblower complaint up in administrative appeals for five years. But if you panic, you trigger a criminal grand jury that will pull our entire corporate board into the dock.""

""Those children died because of your rushed batch manufacturing, Richard!"" Stephen spat, the guilt he had suppressed for three years suddenly vomiting out of his throat. ""I signed those certificates because you promised to fund my pediatric institute! You made me a murderer!""

""I made you wealthy, Stephen,"" Sterling replied with a chilling sneer. ""You chose to be a murderer all on your own. Now sit down, take a sedative, and let my crisis team handle your wife.""

Stephen looked at the two armed guards flanking the doorway, then looked at the cold, sociopathic face of the man he had sold his soul to.

For the first time in five years, the fog of vanity lifted from Stephen's mind, revealing the horrifying truth: he was not a partner in this empire. He was merely the designated sacrificial lamb.
