Chapter 14: The Bridge Across the Stream

That evening, after the floodwaters had begun to recede and the clinic patients were warm, fed, and sleeping soundly on cots, Stephen and Callie sat on the timber railing of the clinic porch.
The mountain air was sweet and cold, carrying the scent of wet pine needles, woodsmoke, and autumn leaves.
Callie held a tin mug of peppermint tea, watching the moonlight dance across the rushing creek below.
""The Clara Vance Foundation is underwriting the construction of a permanent, full-scale regional medical pavilion here in Coal Fork, Stephen,"" Callie said quietly. ""We received approval from the state health board this morning.""
Stephen looked at her, his throat tight with emotion. ""These people need it, Callie. They have been invisible for fifty years.""
""I know,"" Callie turned to look at him. ""And the community board submitted an official request that you be appointed the full-time administrative director of the facility.""
Stephen lowered his head, staring at his rough, calloused hands.
""I am a convicted felon, Callie,"" Stephen said softly. ""I cannot wear the coat again.""
""No one here cares about the coat, Stephen,"" Callie replied, her voice filled with a deep, unshakeable warmth. ""They care about the hands that hold the stretcher in the mud. You have paid your debt to the world. Now let the work heal you.""
