Chapter 10: The Letters from Cold Spring

Every three months, a single white envelope arrived at the prison mailroom, bearing the postmark of Cold Spring, New York.

Inside was always a typed progress report from the *Clara Vance Foundation for Pediatric Medical Transparency*—a non-profit clinical oversight institute Callie had established using her share of the federal whistleblower whistleblower bounty.

The institute funded independent, open-source laboratory verification for life-saving pediatric medications, ensuring that no pharmaceutical corporation could ever hide toxicity data behind proprietary corporate secrets again.

In the fourth year of his sentence, Callie enclosed a short handwritten note:

*Stephen,*

*Last week, the foundation successfully blocked the commercial distribution of an unverified synthetic hormone that would have affected fifty thousand children across Latin America.*

*The independent review board used the statistical verification protocols you drafted in your research journals during the trial.*

*The work goes on. The light is holding.*

*Callie.*

Stephen sat on his narrow bunk in the quiet cell, pressing the thin sheet of paper against his chest, tears of gratitude wetting his rough khaki shirt.

He did not write back asking for reconciliation. He wrote only three words on a standard prison postcard:

May you like

*Guard the children.*
