Chapter 8 - The Ghost in the Manifest

Elena tapped the screen of her phone, opening the attached flight manifest Viktor had intercepted from a private aviation network. Her eyes scanned the list of passengers boarding Marcus Thorne’s private jet bound for an offshore tax haven scheduled to depart right after the Metropolitan Gala. Among the names of Thorne’s inner circle and corporate lawyers were two unexpected additions: Margaret Vance and Julian Vance.
"They're fleeing the country," Elena whispered to the empty corridor, the terrifying realization clicking into place.
Julian wasn't just planning to fight her in court or beg for mercy; the moment the corporate accounts were frozen, he had already initiated a secondary, underground escape plan orchestrated by Marcus Thorne. They were liquidating every hidden asset they could scrape together, planning to catch a midnight flight to an island nation with no extradition treaties, leaving the wreckage of Vance Enterprises and hundreds of ruined employees behind them.
"Viktor," Elena said instantly into her phone as she speed-walked toward her private elevator. "Are the federal aviation authorities aware of this?"
"I just leaked the preliminary fraud reports and the international flight manifest to the SEC enforcement division and the FBI's financial crimes unit," Viktor replied on the other end, his voice filled with grim satisfaction. "They can't legally stop the jet until it clears customs on the tarmac, but the moment Julian boards that plane tonight, federal agents will be waiting to slap the cuffs on him."
"Don't let them arrest him on the tarmac," Elena instructed coldly, stepping into the elevator.
"What? Why not? You want him to escape?" Viktor asked, genuine confusion lacing his tone.
"No," Elena said, her eyes flashing with a dark, calculated brilliance. "If he gets arrested quietly on a dark runway, nobody sees it. It lacks poetry. I want him to fall from grace in front of every billionaire, journalist, and socialite in this city. I want him to feel the exact humiliation I felt standing outside that grand house in the freezing rain."
"The Metropolitan Gala," Viktor realized instantly, a low whistle escaping his lips. "You're going to trap him in plain sight."
"Exactly," Elena said. "Make sure my VIP invitation is waiting at the gala entrance, and ensure the press corps knows that the newly reinstated CEO of Vance Enterprises will be making a special, unannounced red-carpet appearance."
"It will be the biggest social media event of the decade," Viktor chuckled darkly. "Consider the stage set."
The elevator doors slid open to the ground floor lobby. Elena swept through the marble foyer with breathtaking elegance, her white silk gown catching the afternoon light as she climbed back into her waiting black luxury car. The city outside was bustling with evening traffic, oblivious to the financial earthquake brewing beneath its surface.
She spent the next few hours in her penthouse command center, reviewing security blueprints of the grand ballroom where the gala was being held, confirming media placements, and coordinating directly with federal prosecutors to ensure the timing of the sting operation was executed with surgical precision.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of violet and crimson, Elena stood before her full-length mirror. She fastened her diamond necklace one last time, adjusting the cuffs of her gown. She looked like an angel of vengeance—flawless, untouchable, and utterly lethal.
